Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Winter Garden, FL

Common questions from homeowners in Winter Garden and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often should a dryer vent in Winter Garden actually be cleared?

Once a year covers most households here. Push it to every six or eight months if you run four or more loads a week, if you have long-haired pets, or if the duct travels up through a wall to a second-floor laundry. The humidity works against you: with dew points in the mid-70s for about five months, lint inside the duct absorbs moisture and packs down instead of blowing out. Homes in the newer construction south and west toward Horizon West also take in a lot of lawn and construction dust, which binds to the lint and builds a crust.

What are the warning signs that the duct is clogged?

Towels and jeans coming out damp after a full cycle is the first one most people notice. Then the laundry room gets hot and smells like scorched lint while the machine runs, and the dryer body is too warm to rest your hand on. Go outside and check the hood while a load is going. Weak airflow or a flap that barely lifts means the lint is sitting somewhere in the run. Lint collecting around the door seal or on the floor behind the machine points the same direction.

Walk me through the visit from arrival to cleanup.

We pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition hose, and look at the whole path before touching anything. Then a rotary brush on a flexible rod goes through the duct, powered from the dryer end, with a vacuum capturing what comes loose so it does not end up on your floor. We clear the exterior hood and check that the damper swings freely, since those stick shut after a few summers of pollen and spore load. The dryer gets reconnected with clamped metal transition, we run a cycle, and we measure airflow at the hood so you can see the difference yourself.

How much of my day does this take?

A ground-floor run with a short path to an exterior wall is usually finished in under an hour. Second-floor laundry in the two-story stucco subdivisions takes longer, because the duct climbs through a chase and often has two or three elbows to work past. Older cottages near the downtown historic district and the West Orange Trail can also run long when the laundry was added into a rear porch or a converted service area and the duct wanders to find an exit. If a nest or a crushed section turns up, we tell you before we start the extra work, not after.

Why does one house cost more to clean than the house next door?

Length and shape of the run do most of it. A straight shot through a block wall is quick; a second-floor duct with multiple bends, or a long horizontal run through an attic, takes more rod work and more time. Roof-terminated hoods add ladder work. Nest removal, a damper that has to be replaced, or a stretch of crushed flex duct behind the machine are separate from the basic cleaning, and we look at everything and tell you what it will be before we open a bag.

How do I know the ductwork is at fault and not the appliance?

Quick test: disconnect the hose from the back of the dryer and run it on air-fluff for a couple of minutes. Strong air out the back means the machine is fine and the blockage is in the duct. Weak air out the back points at the blower wheel, a clogged lint screen housing, or a failing heating element. Another tell is a gas dryer that cycles the burner on and off rapidly, or an electric one that trips the thermal fuse repeatedly, which is almost always restricted exhaust rather than a bad part.

Is there a real difference between smooth metal duct and the flexible kind?

Yes, and it shows up fast. Rigid galvanized or aluminum has smooth walls, so lint keeps moving; the ribbed interior of flex catches it at every ridge. White vinyl and the thin foil accordion type are worse again, because they sag between supports and collect a low spot full of damp lint. We see plenty of that in laundry areas retrofitted into rear porches on the older frame and block cottages. Wherever we can, we swap the concealed sections to rigid and leave only a short clamped metal transition behind the dryer.

There is a bird or rodent nest in my vent. What happens then?

It gets removed by hand and by brush from whichever end gives better access, and the debris comes out rather than getting pushed deeper into the run. Dampers that are missing, stuck open, or rusted are the reason nests get started, so we replace the hood with one that closes and fit a guard that still lets the flap swing. We do not install screen mesh over an exhaust, since lint plugs it within a season. If nesting material has packed a long horizontal stretch, that section may need to be opened up, and we will show you what we find first.

My duct runs way too far. Can it be rerouted or given a fan?

Often yes. The simplest fix is finding a closer exterior wall or roof penetration and shortening the path, which beats any other option. Replacing ribbed flex with rigid and cutting out unnecessary elbows also buys back real distance, since every 90-degree bend costs you the equivalent of several feet of straight pipe. An inline booster fan is an option when rerouting is not practical, but it has to be a lint-rated unit wired to the dryer and it needs its own cleaning schedule. We will measure the run, count the bends, and tell you which approach fits your house.

Can you come today, and how far out do you travel?

Same-day slots are usually open, and a dryer that will not dry gets priority. Winter Garden is our home base, on the south shore of Lake Apopka in west Orange County, roughly 14 miles west of downtown Orlando at the edge of the old citrus belt. We work the historic downtown core, the 1980s to 2000s block ranch and stucco subdivisions, and the newer neighborhoods running south and west into Horizon West, plus Oakland, Ocoee, Windermere, Gotha, and Clermont. Summer afternoons mean daily thunderstorms, so exterior and roof work sometimes shifts to a morning window.
